Saalbach Hinterglemm - large ski circus in the Eastern Alps
The majority of Austria's large ski resorts are located in West Tyrol around the Arlberg Massif (St. Anton and Lech Zürs) and at the
Swiss boarder (Serfaus and Ischgl). But also the Eastern Alps feature some beautiful resorts! My personal favourite in the Salzburger
Land is Saalbach Hinterglemm. Located only 70 km from Salzburg it is easily accessible especially from Germany via the B 311. If
you want to hit the Apres Ski bars after lifts close I recommend you book your accommonation in Saalbach or in Hinterglemm. Because
Leogang is considerably quieter in the Apres department. A total of 200km of perfectly groomed trails extend over a vast area between
the three aforementioned mountain villages which makes Saalbach Hinterglemm the 5th largest ski resort in Austria (after Skiwelt Wilder
Kaiser, St. Anton am Arlberg, Lech-Zürs am Arlberg und Ischgl) and the largest ski resort in the Salzburger Land.
To expert skiers I recommend the slopes at the 1964m high Zwölferkogel above Hinterglemm. However very skilled skiers should note that
only 15 of 200 km of trails are marked difficult terrain (black). And because the resort is not among the higher resorts found in
the Alps, compared to other ski resorts in Tyrol it lacks in offpiste possibilities. Beginners find lots of easy terrain at the
(1794m). Take the Kohlmaisgipfelbahn (gondola) from Saalbach to access the easy grounds. Insider tip for all those looking for
cheap accommodation: Vorderglemm is lots cheaper than for instance in Saalbach. And a direct access to the resort from Vorderglemm
is possible with the Schönleiten Gondala!
