There is no doubt that the Allgäu is one of the most beautiful regions in Bavaria. Oberstdorf is situated directly at the border to
Austria in the middle of Nebelhorn (2224m above sea leavel) and Fellhorn (2038m above sea level). It has 10.000 inhabitants and the
sea level is 800m. Close to the city are five small and medium-sized ski resorts. One of the smallest resorts is Söllereck-Höllwies
with its 11kms of interconnected slopes. Most of the runs are pretty flat and easy which makes it the perfect area for novices. After a good
morning of skiing the best place to get some lunch definitley is the restaurant "Gasthaus Seeweg". It is situated directly at the base station of the
resort and offers a great view on the mountains of the "Allgäu" and the Alpine foothills.
A lot more demanding than the Söllereck is the Nebelhorn resort. 13kms of relatively difficult slopes can be explored by skiers and snowboarders.
But there is a disadvantage. The run to the base station is definitley one of the best in this resort but you have to take the big gondola up
the mountain again. On busy days it happens that there is quite a long time to wait before you can hit the slopes again
The finest resort in Oberstdorf is without doubt the ski area Fellhorn-Kanzelwand which separates the german Stillachtal valley from the austrian
Kleinwalsertal valley. With a total of 14 lift facilities (5 chair lifts, 5 tow lifts and 4 gondolas) skiers can reach 24 slopes. The
difficulty of most them is medium. A true alpine paradise is the neighboured Kleinwalsertal. This valley can only be accessed by driving via Germany.
In this valley winter sport enthusiasts can ski two small ski areas. One of them is the resort around the Ifen peak (2230m). When you get there
you will find a lot of free parking space and a double chairlift which brings you into the ski resort. If you drive right to the end of the
Kleinwalsertal valley you will find the "Walmendingerhornbahn" lift facility which gives you access to the second ski resort. It solely offers
12km of interconnected slopes. This is not a lot but the advantages of this resort are striking. Once reached the top of the resort
the scenery is just amazing. You can see the Allgäu and its plains in the north and the Alps of the "Vorarlberg" region in the south. Here the
winter sport enthusiast can enjoy skiing as it was decades before. No crowds or noise can disturb the pure freedom of skiing!
